MOUNT WELLINGTON WATER
OPPOSITION OF RATEPAYERS While supporting the proposal for a transport board members of the Mount Wellington Road Board on Wednesday claimed that transport jwas of less importance to city dwellers than to those who resided in the outer suburban areas, and therefore licences should be granted to bus-owners to suit the residents outside the city. The Public Works Department is to be asked to use the spoil from the cuttings being made on the Westfield railway deviation to widen the roadways at each end of the overbridges, instead of removing the spoil for fillings elsewhere. The registration fees for dogs were fixed at: Greyhounds, 10s: cattle dogs, 2s 6d; all other dogs, 7s 6d. Resolutions passed by the Mount Wellington Ratepayers’ Association were received as follow: (1) ‘That the association is strongly opposed to the raising of a water Loan, as proposed by the board, until ratepayers have an opportunity of expressing their confidence or otherwise in the present administration at the arfhual election to be held in May next.” (2) “We consider that the proposal of the board to obtain a water supply from the Auckland City Council is not in the best interests of the district, for the reason that the council is unable to supply its own customers; that the cost of installation would be excessive, and that there is an abundant supply of better water in the Mount Wellington district which may be obtained at a less rate than that offered by the City Council.”
