OLD-STYLE BOXING
The management of The Ring, London, recently arranged a novel feature in support of a big bout. They secured Edouard Dubus and his wife, exponents of La Savate, to give an exhibition of the old-style French boxing. La Savate, in which the use of the feet for “hitting” is allowed, as well as the hands, went out of favour many years ago, but Mons and Mme. Dubus have perfected themselves in the art, and have revived it at the leading French music halls. This reference to La Savate brings back memories of Louis Anastasie, the French champion, who came to London twenty years or more ago and fought Pedlar Palmer. There was considerable talk at the time as to what would happen if a champion of La Savate met a champion of La Savate met a champion of the British school. So a match was made between the “Pedlar” and Anastasie at the Britannia Theatre, Hoxton. The Frenchman was to box in his style; Palmer in his. There were some exciting exchanges, and everything went w r ell until Anastasie landed a few hefty kicks on Palmer’s jaw. That nettled the “Pedlar,” who began kicking back, and the referee, acting on the rules drawn up, disqualified him. 7ft v-r rrr tF y v -fi rr rF -F 7*
