STEAMERS HELD UP
TROUBLE WITH SEAMEN GENERAL STOPPAGE FEARED By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. The crew of the lighthouse steamer Lady Lock has been paid off, as no men are offering to fill the vacancies aboard. Three steamers are now idle in Sydney as a result of the seamen’s dispute. The steamer Goulburn was unable to find three men to complete the crew: and calls w-ere made for the steamers Saros and Mackarra, but without result. Later calls for seamen for the heldup vessels were again futile. Fears are now entertained that unless the Seamen’s Union withdraws its, demand for full pay for its members who attended the stop-work meeting, and supplies full crews, a general hold-up of the inter-State shipping will result. The shipowners’ representatives say the position is becoming intolerable, and the companies will make no further concessions to the seamen in the hope of settling the dispute
The passenger steamer Bombala is held up at Brisbane, as the seamen did not offer for duty when a call was made to complete the crew. At Adelaide the crew of the steamer Nalpa have given notice, as no unionists were offering to fill vacancies in her complement.— A. and N.Z.
