SWIMMING CARNIVAL
CHAMPIONS IN ACTION ONE RECORD EQUALLED FARRELL’S GREAT EFFORT Although no records were established and only one equalled, the first night of the Auckland swimming championships held in the tepid baths last evening proved highly interesting and exciting. There was a good attendance, and the meeting was carried out without a hitch.
N. K. Sylow, Ponsonby, who is only a newcomer to competitive swimming, had a decisive victory in the 220yds breaststroke test, winning the event by over half a length in 3m 9 4-ss, equalling the New Zealand record. His was a rattling good performance. G. Hridson, last season’s intermediate champion and record-holder, won the 220yds men’s test, beating the veteran, J. Enwright, and the ex-champion, E. V. Cunnold. Although the time was slow, Bridson will do better. The race of the night was the 100yds men’s test, which was won by J. Farrell in 60 2-ss. Farrell, another' newcomer, created a surprise in beating the best of Auckland’s sprint men, and his great finishing effort was loudly cheered.
Miss E. Champion was too good for her opponents in the 100yds intermediate girls’ test and won easily in excellent style. The general standard of swimming was good and gives promise of better times. The handicap events were well patronised, and proved exciting and close. The officials carried out their duties with credit, and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed.
