DAVIES UNDEFEATED TITLE REMAINS IN AUCKLAND Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. In the play-off In the Dominion ■ chess championship, A. W. O. Davies, • Auckland, defeated F. K. Kelling and retained the title. The game lasted i 52 moves. From a Retis opening the game proI ceeded on modern lines into the middle | game, which became interesting. Kelling obtained an isolated centre pawn i had compensation in position ; which Davies had to play carefully. | Kelling made an indifferent move of which full advantage was not taken j and to relieve pressure Kelling chal- : lenged queens. After an exchange of | queens Kelling was rather cramped, i having his king very much out of Play. Shortly afterwards Kelling allowed Davies to win an isolated centre pawn which gave the latter two strong passed pawns in the centre of j the board. Kelling was unable to stop che march of these pawns and resigned j after a hard struggle.
