LATE MRS. HELEN McGEE

KAWAU COPPER MINES RECALLED Born in Epsom in 1843, Mrs. Helen McGee died at her home in Bassett Road, Remuera, last week. At the age of five she went with her parents to Kawau Island, where copper-mining operations were being conducted. Mrs. McGee received her early education at St. Mark’s School, Remuera, and while her parents were visiting the Californian gold diggings she lived with her grandparents at Epsom for five years. When they returned she lived with them at Otahuhu until 1864, when she married the late Mr. Arthur McGee, who was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council. After farming at Mangere and Papatoetoe they lived at Walmsley Road, Otahuhu, and Bassett Road. Remuera. Until her death Mrs McGee enjoyed good health, and could recall many interesting incidents of the Maori wars. Mrs. McGee is survived by two sons and six daughters. The funeral took place at Otara Cemetery on Saturday.
