NEW YEAR IN EARNEST

BACK TO BUSINESS SHOPS OPENED TO-DAY 192 S began seriously for most cf the city-dwellers to-day. Good resolutions made during the vacation had the glare of the first working day turned on them, and to many they probably seemed less easy to accomplish. Another blue and gold day; but the lazy hours on the sands and the cooling swims were gone. Back to bench and counter, desk and table the workers trooped, pale faces being rarer than heavy pockets. Queen Street, which has been strangely desolate for 12 days, became alive once more, and pedestrians had to keep to the left and once again carefully pick their way. Banks, warehouses and shops were open, and only one or two of the fortunate professionals can still continue their vacation.
