FLAX SWAMP ON FIRE
OUTBREAK AT FOXTON 200 ACRES AFFECTED (Special to THE SUN.) FOXTON, Tuesday. Two hundred acres of flax swamp have been affected by a fire which has been raging for several days in a swamp about a mile from the Foxton township, and which is still spreading. Damage is estimated at present at several hundred pounds. The total area of the block, situated near Hartley’s Bend, is 350 acres. The area under fire is leased from the owner by Mr. H. Hartley, a wellknown resident of Manawatu Heads, and Mr. R. Simpson. The fire has been fanned for several days by a south-w r est wind, which changed today, and is now blowing from the north-west, driving the fire into a fresh area. The fire is a spectacular sight by night. Rain is expected, but a high wind is blowing.
