DRAWN IN A SWEEP
ROMANCE AT ’S BAY TWO AMONG SO MANY Good men are hard to find at —’s Bay—in holiday-time. That delightful seaside resort, to which romance is no stranger, was an almost Adamless Eden during the last week-end. Eves there were in plenty, charming and pretty, and the sighs of disappointment among them were loud along the beach of the bay. There was intense excitement in the hotel when a telephone message arrived from Auckland requesting accommodation for two young men who would arrive by the boat on Saturday afternoon. The message was taken by a modern
miss and carried to the landlady. More excitement followed. “Where would they sit?” “Who would enjoy their company?” The sighs of disappointment gave place to clamour and hopes ran high among girlish hearts. Two young men—it sounded too good to be true. The sun shone brighter on the bay. A consultation with the landlady. Would they? Yes they would! There was nothing else for it; they would draw lots for the young men—so few among so many. And everyone agreed. Two young men from an Auckland office disembarked from their boat, and strolled to the hotel. Two young women sat on the beach and watched them arrive— smiling with anticipation. “Hello! Ooo—ooo!” they called.” Are you th© men from the office?” “Yes!” bashfully replied the two young men. “We’ve drawn you in the sweep” said the two young women; and romance still goes its cheery way at a popular week-end resort not 100 miles from Auckland.
