New Year Trotting
CANTERBURY PARK FIXTURE
Chief Event to Logan Park
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. THE Canterbury Park Trotting- Club opened its Summer Meeting- in beautiful weather, .but with the second race disposed of a high nor’-west wind sprang- up and made the conditions unpleasant. The track was fast and the management excellent.
( Special to THE SUN)
SARSAPARILLA AT LAST Sarsaparilla won the Introductory Handicap, but there was little merit in the performance. It was the best race he has trotted, due no doubt to having everything his own way. Reta Vivian led for a round, where she gave up her chance. Had Nelson Ata gone away kindly he would have won. Sea Queen was a long way back, with a mile to go, and then finished second. Lady Fan went level all the way to fill third place, and Nelson McKinney was fourth. The first half-mile was done in 1.14, mile in 2.25 2-5, and the mile and a-half in 3.36. A CLOSE FINISH After losing her balance a furlong from home, Sarella won the Templeton Handicap, during which she had expert help from F. J. Holmes. She is an aged mare by St. Swithin from Necessity, and is owned by Mr. W. J. Smith. Great Form made the pace all the way, leaving the first half-mile behind in 1.12 and the mile in 2.20. He stuck to his task all the way, but Sarella beat him in the last stride. The favourite, Firebrand, gave a lot of trouble and he eventually went away on a break, losing six lengths. Going down the back the last time he held a winning chance, but failed to stay on. Pageant was well placed all the way, but was not good enough, and Roldena once again failed to begin properly. LOGAN PARK WINS WELL Messrs. Armstrong and Johnson’s gelding Logan Park won the Canterbury Handicap after being well driven by C. Dunleavy, who is associated with W. J. Tomkinson’s establishment. Logan Park showed good form at Wellington, and his victory was no surprise to followers of form. He is by Logan Pointer from Miss Burlington. Golden Devon was first out of the barrier, but on reaching the far bend Roicole dashed into the lead and took the field to the first half mile in 1.7 3-5, and to the mile in 2.16, where he commenced to drop back. Golden Devon then resumed the role of pacemaker, but on reaching the mile and a-quarter disc in 2.48 2-5, Logan Park went to the front with Golden Devon, Trampfast and Dalnahine as his most dangerous opponents. Going along the back Queen’s Own made a forward move but Logan Park sailed along in front and though threatened by Trampfast in the straight he had a length's advantage when the line was crossed, Queen’s Own getting up in line to beat Dalnahine by a neck for third money, with Golden Devon fourth. Black Admiral, who was favourite, never looked a winner at any stage of the trip, and Acron failed to leave the mark. The last two furlongs were run in 33 2-5. THE FAVOURITE LANDS When Lady Cio went to the front at the rise of the barrier it was thought that she would lead all the way in the Lyttelton Handicap, but to the consternation of the followers she was beaten a round from home. Once Yoicks took charge E. C. McDermott kept him busy and he won all out by a length and a-half from Alvira, who finished on well. Native Queen began fast and was early in a good position, but she could not see out her contract, being third at the judge. Mate o’ Mine was under pressure at the bend on the way home, but be could not respond, being fourth at the finish. Heroic was second with six furlongs to go, but he died away three furlongs from the winning post. The winner went his first mile in 2.16 2-5. He is owned by W. J. Farrell, being by Logan Pointer from Sallywood and is trained by F. G. Harris. A POPULAR VICTORY A popular victory was that of Mr. W. Trist’s gelding Duke Bingen, who won the Stewards’ Handicap. The fact of him staying two miles so well was as pleasing as it was surprising. His stable mate Swiftbine was looked upon as the winner, but after having every chance he petered out two furlongs from home. Randolph, Tiny Moon and Herbilwyn ruined their chances by breaking three furlongs from home. When Our Lady put in her claim she soon reached the front, and was first into the straight, but in the run home she tired and Duke Bingen wore her down to win by half a length. Lady Fan led for a mile and five furlongs, where she tired badly. Wild Hebe was in the picture all the way, and so was Nelson McKinney, but both failed to stay on. The winner was driven by F. G. Elolmes and is trained by R. W. Franks. He is by Nelson Bingen from Duchess of Rothschild. WILLIAM THE GREAT IN FORM The manner in which William the Great won the Islington Handicap was gratifying to his connections, as well as to those who supported the promising pacer. This marks the son of Great Audubon and Annie Dillon’s third win this season, and it is obvious that he will win further prizes. He is owned by Mr. J. Snelling, and is trained by H. Frost, who drove him an admirable race. Dr. Dillon* and Ouimet made the pace a cracker from the word go for six furlongs, the first quarter of a mile being left behind from the start in 34 3-5, and the first four furlongs in 1.*7. The mile was reached in 2.14 4-5, at which stage William the Great and Logan Holme were well clear of Dr. Dillon and Ouimet. In the run home William the Great held Logan Holme safe to win by two lengths. Over the last 50 yards Terence Dillon came with a good run and cut Dr. Dillon out of third money. Going out of the straight Kotuku Jack and Logan Chief collided and Kotuku Jack nearly came down, while Logan Chief had his sulky badly damaged. ZENITH SCORES Sahib showed a bold front over the early stages of the Railway Handicap, but when it came to business Zenith came away to win handsomely by two lengths. He is a five-year-old gelding owned bv Mr. W. Hurston and was ridden by J. Behrens. Sungleam failed to go siway and Pat Dillon f 11 after going five furlongs. Pointalena, Native Queen and Nipper were up close to the leaders all the way. Native Queen was second into the straight, but she failed to finish good enough to overhaul Zenith, who is a full brother to Huon Denver, being by Brent Locanda from Hedvic. F. G. Holmes, rider of Pat Dillon, was not 11UrC * AN OVERDUE WIN A long overdue and popular win was scored by Harold Burwood, who was driven by his owner, F. C. Hogarth. Of late Harold Burwood has raced much better, and his owner deserves credit for the manner in which he has stuck to him. He is by Harold Dillon from Pride of Burwood. Omaha began fast but on reaching the stand Avenger dashed to the front, but with half the journey covered Omaha and Avenger broke, and fell back- Going along the back Donside and Harold Burwood went into the lead, and after a desperate struggle between the pair
Harold Burwood won by a head. Brentloc, who began fast, went 2.11 4-5 for third money. Lord Bingen failed to begin correctly and was early in the ruck. The totalisator investments reached £34,657, compared with £37,995 on the corresponding day last year—a decrease of £ 3.335.
