Racing at Ellerslie

SUMMER FIXTURE CONTINUED

A.R.C. Handicap to Star Stranger

MARTARMA’S DERBY VICTORY

The summer fixture of the Auckland Racing' Club was advanced another stage yesterday when excellent sport was again provided. The principal events of the card, the Auckland Racing Club Handicap and Great Northern Derby, provided thrilling contests. Although the favourite, Star Stranger, succeeded in winning the former, the classic race saw the downfall of a hot favourite in Agrion, the successful candidate being Martarma who was allowed to pay a great price.

EXCELLENT weather and the promise—which was amply fulfilled—of interesting racing attracted a large concourse of people to the beautiful Ellerslie course yesterday, when the Auckland Racing Club presented the third day’s card of the summer carnival. The splendid sport provided, together with the capable manner in which the fixture was conducted, was greatly appreciated by the large assemblage, while the exciting finishes in the various handicaps were a triumph for the work of the adjuster. Mr. F. J. McManemin. That patrons were in speculative mood was demonstrated by the heavy pool on the machine, the sum of £ 111,964 being registered for the day as against £98,450 10s for the corresponding day last year, a substantial increase of £13,513 10s. For the three days of the present carnival £315,808 # has passed through the totalisator, an increase of £37,205 on the total of £278,603 recorded for the three days of the 1926 fixture. POPULAR VICTORIES The victory of the favourite Star Stranger in the A.R.C. Handicap was cordially received, the public recognising and acknowledging the sterling performance of the Martian gelding in defeating a strong field under the handicap of 9.4. Although the great majority of backers received a setback when Agrion was defeated in the Derby, they showed appreciation of the fine performance of Martarma in real sporting manner. Another popular victory was that of Aussie, the Te Awamutu-trained sprinter, who despite the impost of 9.5 won the Newmarket Handicap from end to end, in the fast time of 1.12 4-5, fully justifying the high opinions formed of his capabilities by his admirers. The surprise of the day was the price paid by King Lu, who after being well supported on the first and second days, was allowed to pay a double-figure dividend.
