WAIHEKE ANNUAL REGATTA

GOOD RACING WITNESSED There were some close finishes seen at the Waiheke annual “regatta held yesterday at Cowes Bay. YACHTSMEN ENTERTAINED Some of the crews of yachts which cruised up the coast during the holidays were entertained royally by the Maoris of the Hirini district. They were received in old native style, with a haka of welcome. Further hakas, music and dancing were enjoyed during the evening, and the hosts were thanked, on behalf of the visiting yachtsmen, by Mr. Laui'ie. HEARTSEASE IN ACTION Good sailing and a liberal handicap allowed the old-time cruiser Heartsease to run away with the keelers’ rac© at Tauranga. Rather appreciating the conditions, Heartsease carried a cloud of canvas, and her towering mast made her a majestic picture. Her stately spread was much more picturesque than the marconi-rig of NgaToa, another boat which performed exceptionally well until she retired after fouling the mark-boat. Heartsease at one tim© had trouble with her leader, which dragged for an appreciable time, but for the most part she tramped along steadily. Roomy, graceful and honest, she is a great craft for a big wind and a big sea.
