CARPKXTIER RESIGNS.—The wellknown boxer, Georges Carpentier. has resigned his title of heavy-weight champion of France. He finds that to defend the title would interfere with his theatrical engagements.—A. and N.Z. MOUNT MORGAN MINE.—A statement has been issued by the general manager of the Mount Morgan Company that all active operations at the mine will cease at the end of the year. All mining and ore breaking has already ceased. POLAR EXPEDITION. —Commander R. E. Byrd has purchased the steamer Samson, of 278 ions, in preparation for his South Polar expedition, when he proposes to fly to the Pole. —A. and N.Z. FATAL DRINKING.—Seven men arc dead, one is dying, another in demented, and four others are recovering from drinking methylate hydratr which they purchased at a chemist s shop in Winnipeg. The men were unemployed labourers, and the drinking party took place in the Chinese quarter.—A. and N.Z. BRITISH UNEMPLOYED. The Ministry of Labour announces that or December 19 the total number of un employed in Britain was 1.099,900. T‘ - was 25.323 less than in the week b - fore, and 49,811 less than a fortnight previously. It was 209,839 less than a year before.—British Official Wireless. COAL DEPRESSION. —Owing to the depression in the coalfields, those members of the House of Commons wfco are members of the Miners' Union have agreed to a reduction of £SO fr - the allowance made to them by the Miners’ Federation. Their Parli -m- rtary salary, with the allowrance, is r v £ 600 a year.—A. and N.Z.
