At 16 Mr. Hitch<iock was a clerk in an advertising ofl J? e a salary of 15s a week. - ? ls first conr »ection with the film industry was with the Famous Players Company at the Islington studios, now the property of the Gainsborough Company. He has been film editor, scenarist, art director and assistant director. It was while he was under contract as assistant director to Gainsborough Pictures that Mr. Michael Balcon, managing director of the company, sent him to Germany to direct his first film, "The Pleasure Garden.” Since then he has gone from success to success, which culminated In ‘The Ring,” described as one of the greatest films ever made in England. Mr. J. A. Thorpe, general manager of British International Pictures, said they considered Mr. Hitchcock the most brilliant director in Europe. Mr. Hitchcock is now directing the film version of “The Farmer’s Wife,” which will be followed immediately by "Champagne,” with Betty Balfour as the principal actress.
