NEW ZEALAND QUOTED
BRITISH FILMS BILL QUESTION OF CONTROL It is not anticipated that the 'work of putting the finishing touches to the Films Bill when Parliament reassembles will occupy many days, writes an English correspondent. While the trade now appears to attach great importance to the re-inser-tion of the phrase “British-controlled company” in place of the description “British company,” bv which those eligible to make films for the all-Brit-ish quota are now I gather
that Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, President of the Board of Trade, is disposed to take a somewhat different view. He believes, I am told, that the object which the trade wishes to secure could better be attained by insisting that a majority of the directors must be British. The suggestion has been made by the trade that a film should not become ineligible for. the quota because it has been photographed in a foreign studio rented by the British company. I gather that on this the Government is of opinion that studio accommodation that this concession will not be necessary. Information has reached London that the New Zealand Government is so well satisfied with the success attending the introduction of the British Films Bill in this country is increasing so rapidly ! that it proposes to proceed on similar : lines without delay.
