A Theatrical Fable Here a “fable,” entitled “The Snob.” which appeared recently in “The Daiiy Mail,” London: There was once a man sitting in a theatre, where a play was being acted; now the play was a funny one, for it was called “Farcical Comedy,” and beyond that the characters hit each other often with bags full of flour, and fell downstairs, and were generally humorous, and all the audience laughed very much, except one man. who began yawning terribly every time one character hit another in the eye with a custard pie. And his friends said to him: “Are you not amused at this exquisite fun?” And the man drew himself up very stiff and said: “Although the idea of being banged in the eye and thrown into tubs of water is of itself productive of mirth, I fancy a really good play should contain something more—something, say, in the nature of some sort of dialogue, now and then, as a kind of relief to the more active and popular aspect of this entertainment.” And they said: “You (something) High-Brow!” and after a scuffle had him thrown into the mud outside.
