LYRIC
“BENT FOR HEAVEN” “Bent For Heaven” is attracting large audiences to the Lyric Theatre. Patsy Ruth Miller is seen in the role of Jude Lowry, the mountain girl for love of whom family feuds rage and a young religious fanatic engineers a roaring flood. Miss Miller makes Jude a sympathetic yet strong character, and is lovely even in the simple clothes of a mountain girl. John Harron plays gay, dare-devil Sid, back from the war and anxious to keep out of a fight, but willing to get into a good scrap if necessary. Gayne Whitman, as Jude’s brother, makes the scrap necessary when, inflamed with liquor and false tales from Rufe, who revives an old family feud. Rufe, the hired man who “gets religion” and all but wrecks everybody’s lives as a result, is played by Gardner James, whose portrayals of erratic characters are famous. The remainder of the cast, which includes James Marcus, Evelyn Selbie and Wilfred North, is consistently excellent.
