New Year Trotting
CANTERBURY PARK FIXTURE
Classy Fields Engaged
THE New Year fixture of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club will open on Monday when a splendid programme will be submitted. The fields are fully representative both in respect to quantity and quality and interesting racing should be witnessed.
The Canterbury Park Summer fixture is one of the most popular in, the South Island, and coming at a period when the light-harness sport is right at its peak, attracts considerable attention throughout the Dominion. Large fields of a good class will be the order of the day and speculators are set a difficult task in sorting out the probable dividend-payers. The programme will be opened with the INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; for unhoppled trotters; class 3.40; 15 miles. Sarsaparilla . . Lt yds. bhd. Molly Molloy . Lt Peter the First 30 Rita Vivian . . Lt Nelson Ata . . 36 Todd Bingen Lt Queen Ida . . 48 Count Peter . Lt Sea Queen . . 48 yds. bhd. Little Johnnie 60 Fairlight ... 12 Nelson Pieter McKinney . . 108 Timmerman 24 Lady Pan . . . 108 There does not appear to be much choice among the fronfc-rankers, of which perhaps Sarsaparilla will do best. Fairlight should go a solid race and Pieter Timmerman looks to be coming back to form. Peter the First will keep the opposition busy and if Nelson Ata does it right he will add a lot of interest to the race. Sea Queen is a good mare, but may require a run or two. Little Johnnie is always one to be considered. If he has a day on it will take a good one to beat him. Nelson McKinney has been racing solidly of late and the same remark applies to Lady Fan and the back-markers will come in for a lot of support. Pieter Timmerman, Peter the First and Nelson McKinney may b© best supported. The next item to receive attention will be the TEMPLETON HANDICAP (Harness) Of £200; class 3.35; 15 miles. Great Form . Lt His Majesty . 12 Auto Lt yds. bhd. Master Don . . Lt Sarella .... 12 Sadie Huon . Lt Richore .... 24 Roldena . . . Lt King Abdullah 24 Satin Princess Lt Wairua .... 24 Holly Bell . . Asset 48 Ivor 12 Jackie Audubon ... 48 A fair lot of mares appear on the end of this handicap and anything that can begin well should have a good chance of success. Great Form, Sadie Huon, Roldena, Firebrand, Pageant and Petronius are engaged and it is quite probable the winner will hail from this section. Petronius won at Greymouth and Firebrand at Dunedin recently. Ivor showed good form at New Brighton. Richore would only require to go right to have a chance to get the money. Wee Gus is coming right and Jackie Audubon, Springtime and Asset are a useful trio. The latter is a good filly and may be ready now. Firebrand, Petronius and Asset may receive most support. Interest will then be taken In the parade of the candidates engaged in the CANTERBURY HANDICAP (Harness) Of £1,100; class 4.30; 2 miles. Trampfast . . Lt yds. bhd. Waitaki Girl . 72 Talent ... 12 Prince Pointer 84 Talar o ... 36 A classy field is engaged for the big stake and from the front, the trotter Trampfast should have a say in the decision of the heat. Golden Devon may still find the distance a bit beyond him, but Fight Ever will be a tough proposition. The roan has not been too eager of late to leave the peg, but all going well in this direction he will be hard to head off. Logan Park, however, looks the pick of the bunch on the front, and in fact he appears to be the pick of the whole basket. He will
SET FOR IT
EULALIE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE HER VERY BEST FORM FREEHOLD’S RARE CHANCE One of the most interesting races of the Auckland meeting will be the Royal Stakes on Tuesday. This is the special mission for EULALIE, and so little notice should be taken of her form, or lack of it, last Wednesday. J. Barry will again pilot the Absurd filly. What a royal show the two-year-old Freehold would have with 6.13! Unfortunately he has not been able to do his best, and his form on Monday and Wednesday suggested that he was by no means right. If he has got over his disability he would possess a rare chance of beating even 'Eulalie when in receipt of 361 b. As it is, with Childsplay an unlikely starter, we will have to look to STAG HUNTER to extend the favourite. The field for the race is as follows: ROYAL STAKES Of £I,OOO. For two and three-year-olds.
not have Tompkinson’s services, but probably Dunlevy will be in the sulky. Talent is about due for a big effort. Talaro would only require to be at his best to make it warm for the opposition. Queen’s Own, Black Admiral, Acron and Da In ah in e are a nice lively quartette, but on form so far this season the latter must be given the premier position. Three wins in succession, all accomplished in rare style, are down to his credit and he may make it four. Loganwood is a solid customer and always likely to upset calculations. Waitaki Girl is showing signs of returning to form. Then there is Prince Pointer, so with such talent backers can have a good range of fancies. Logan Park, Dalnahine and Waitaki Girl may be the favourites. The excitement of the principal event over attention will be directed to the LYTTELTON HANDICAP (Saddle) Of £210; class 3.35; miles. Yoicks .... Lt yds. bhd. Royal Glenaray ... 12 Authoress . . Lt Heroic . . 36 Beverley Mate o’ Mine . 36 Audubon ... Lt Nipper .... 36 Lady Cio . . . Lt Alvira 48 yds. bhd. Royal Oak . . 4S My Sonny ... 12 Native Queen . 72 A small field will face the starter in this heat, where those who like the weight on top will try conclusions. It is not a strong field and of those on the end Royal Authoress may receive most support. My Sonny is a sound proposition and Glenaray is sure to get a good deal of support. Heroic will have a host of friends and Mate o’ Mine is a useful sort and in this society should run prominently. Nipper is overdue and Alvira has been threatening to do things for a while back. Royal Oak is a useful sort and Native Queen comes from a stable that usually shelters something good. When the balance is struck Royal Authoress, Mate o’ Mine and Heroic may be the fancies. Lovers of contests for square-gaiters will have an opportunity of seeing some good ones in action in the STEWARDS’ HANDICAP (Harness) Of £250; for unhoppled trotters; class 4.46; 2 miles. Randolph . . Lt yds. bhd. yds. bhd. Herbilwyn . . 4S Swiftbine ... 24 Audobell ... 60 Nelson Duke Bingen . 60 McKinney ... 36 Our Lady ... 72 Tiny Moon . . 36 Nighborn ... 72 Lady Fan . . 36 Cannonball ... 108 Wild Hebe . . 4S Randolph is on the end of this trotters’ event, but he has repeatedly let his admirers down and they must be getting tired of his performances. Swiftbine has recent form to recommend him and he should be one of the toughest to dispose of on the journey. Nelson McKinney is staying on better and should account for Tiny Moon and Lady Fan, although the latter is doing well of late. Wild Hebe and Herbilwyn are a solid pair and will make things full of interest. The former
was in the picture at New Brighton, and will take a power of beating. Old Nighborn cannot be given the cold shoulder yet and Cannonball is such a solid customer he is sure to be handy at the wire. Wild Hebe, Cannonball and Swiftbine may receive chief support. Some of the speed kings will measure strides in the ISLINGTON HANDICAP Of £300; class 2.45: li miles. (Harness) Doctor Dillon Lt yds. bhd. William the Trenand ... 12 Great .... Lt Logan Holme 36 Ouimet .... Lt Terence DSloo 36 yds. bhd. Logan Chief . 48 General Bingen 12 Bessie Logan 60 Kotuku Jack . 12 A speedy lot will face the barrier, and providing Doctor Dillon is right he should set the others a merry clip. William the Great is also useful, and the aged Ouimet can still muster up a lot of pace. General Bingen will be at home over the distance, but Kotuku Jack on recent essays will be a tough proposition. He has come right again, and should go on getting the money. Logan Holme has plenty of speed, but in his recent starts did not give of his best. Terence Dillon is a great pacer and when dressed for the fight can muster up a torrent of speed. He will be the hardest to keep out of the money. Logan Chief is showing signs of his former dash, and Bessie Logan is a brilliant mare. The voting, however, may be in favour of Terence Dillon, Kotuku Jack and Doctor Dillon. Another race in which the runners carry the weight on top is the RAILWAY HANDICAP Of £250; class 2.18; 1 mile. (Saddle) Fat Dillon . . Lt yds. bhd. Sungleam . . . Lt Hoon Hay . . 12 Sahib . . . . Lt Kulnine .... 24 Nipper . . . Lt Granite City . 24 yds. bhd. Menember ... 24 Pointalena . . 12 Acre 24 Locanda Child 12 Bing Boy ... 36 Zenith .... 12 Queen's Golden Sun . . 12 General ... 36 Native Queen 12
Another saddle event will create keen speculation, especially as the field is a strong one. Sungleam and Sahib appeal most from the front, and if the latter could be depended upon to g«> off all right, ho would be a warm favourite. Pointalena is due to break it for a win, but has recently not given of his best, and Locanda Child is always worth keeping an eye on. Native Queen, if reserved for this flutter, will be in strong demand and Hoon Hay should find the distance suitable. Kulnine is one to keep on side with, and Acre is partial to the weight on top. Bing Boy and Queen’s General are an “iffy” pair of greys, and either could set some of the money if they went right. Native Queen, Acre and Kulnine may be best backed. An attractive card will be concluded with the AU RE VOIR HANDICAP Omaha .... Lt Harold Lord Bingen . Lt Burwood . . 12 Searchlight Avenger ... 12 Lad Lt Berenice ... 12 Ariki . . . . Lt Donside .... 12 Hoon Hay ... Lt Vice Admiral . 24 High Jinks . . 12 Albert Logan 24 Acre 13 Bing Boy ... 34 Diamond Child 12 Brentloc ..... 48 Daisy Pointer 12 Darknite ... 48 Omaha, Searchlight Lad. Ariki and Hoon Hay are a nice quartette to step from the front of a mile handicap, and their presence suggests that those behind them will require to do their very best. If Ariki left right, it would be “good evening.” High Jinks is on tire up grade again, and Harold Burwood has been knocking for sonic time past. Daisy Pointer can run over eiglii furlongs at a smart clip, and Berenice has been promising to do things at the last few meetings. Avenger, if right, would make things decidedly interesting, and if Bing Bov left it would be hard luck for some of the others. Darknite has not been in the boom since his big price, but Brentloc has plenty of speed if properly used. Whw summed up the order may be Ariki, Harold Burwood and Brentloc.
