Good Sprinters on the Job Again On Monday

The first, second, third and fifth horses past th© post in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day, together with some others that took part in the same race, will be meeting in the Newmarket Handicap on Monday. This list, showing tho horses engaged in these races, with their weights, and also the position (in parentheses) they occupied in th© big sprint last Monday, will be interesting:—

It will thus be seen that on the weights alone Town Guard can be said to be most favourably treated in being dropped six pounds, and with that feather-weight on his back the big chestnut may be more prominent. Aussie has gone up six pounds, but in the interim he won the mile weight-for-ago event. He ran a good race on Boxing Day, and should have done better than fifth. Nancy Lee, who had given an inglorious display at Te Awamutu the previous week, beat all but Awarere in the Railway, and in being raised eight pounds she is not harshly treated. SPEEDY SOUTHERNER

Those that have seen Money Order racing in the South state that the Faper Money gelding has to be allowed to have things all his own way in front if h© is to do any good. He jumped away in the lead last Monday and then dropped back, but he came w-ith a rare rattle in the straight and apparently has more heart than some of the Paper Moneys seen round these parts. On that showing he must be fancied for his next outing. Royal Damon was a long way back in the Railway, and as yet does not appear to be quite up to this class. Paperchase did not get a good passage last Monday, and on Wednesday finished well in third place from a long way back. She should have a better chance in the seven furlongs on Monday. AWARERE—AGAIN?

Perhaps, and perhaps jiot. He showed a surprising burst of speed to set the pace for the cracks behind him, and probably to their disgust lie did not come back. Awarere was doing bis best at the end, but then so were most of the others. The chestnut has gone up 15 pounds, and this should

bring him back to the good ones. However, he will again be bracketed with Aussie, and the pair will be the favourites.

Receipt was not. fast over the early stages on Wednesday. Silveiynine is dropping in the weights, and as he is a good three-year-old some improvement may be anticipated. Kingfield

has lost all form, and in any case he could not have won after going off the course in the Railway. Two newcomers in Monday’s race are Prince Otto and Bracken Abbey. The latter’s connections are optimistic taking on this company. Prince Otto displayed some pac© last season as a two-year-old, and therefore his appearance will be watched with interest.

The final summing-up of this event for Monday appears under the special heading elsewhere.
