ORATRIX SHOWS THEM MANAWATU MEETING CONCLUDES (Spec tat to THE SUN.) PALSIERSTON IS - ., Thursday. The Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting was concluded in dull to-day. The totalisator handled £ 3d,147, compared with »-31,936 last year, making a total of £ 101,627, compared with £119,340 last year. FAVOURITE UNLUCKY For the Tiritea Hurdles, Mister Gamp was the choice of backers, and he was going well when he nearly fell on the flat a furlong and a-lialf from home. Hymgreat led through the straight from Elysianor, Red Fuchsia, Kilburn, Blue Peter, and Revel, and there was no great change at the six furlongs, but with between three and four furlongs to go Red Fuchsia took command, and was never afterwards headed, eventually winning by two lengths from Hymgreat, who beat Kilburn by a neck. Next came Elysianor, Blue Peter, and Mister Gamp. CONSISTENT MISS PAT The biggest support in the Apprentices’ Handicap was for Courageous, with Barryanda and Miss Pat also in demand. Cloyne made the early running, but Miss Pat moved up half a mile from home, and l'ed into the straight from Dainty Ways, Lin Arlington, and Barryanda. A fine finish ensued, in which Miss Pat won by a length from Lin Arlington, with Barryanda and Dainty Ways right up, and Discourse not far away. Courageous was never prominent. CONCENTRATE IMPROVES High Disdain was favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, but several others were well backed. Gold Bag and High Disdain made the early running from
Brown Sugar, Llanore, Briar Root, Moutoa Treasury, Select, and Concentrate. High Disdain led inot the straight from Llanore, Moutoa Treasury, and Gold Bag, but did not finish on. and Concentrate, finishing fast on the outer, got up to win by half a length from Briar Root, with Moutoa Treasury a similar distance away, and Llanore fourth. CIVILITY’S BAD SHOWING Of the field for the Liverpool Handicap, Civility carried the most support, and Lady Limond and Damaris were also strongly in favour. Lady Limond went to the front at the start, and led all the way round from Damaris and Civility. Civility began to tiro half a mile from home, and Oratrix was moving. Lady Limond led into the straight from Damaris and Oratrix, and in a desperate finish Oratrix won by a head from Lady Limond, Damaris being only a little over a
length away third, and Waicullus fourth. Civility finished last. BROAD ACRE’S WIN The ‘Southerner. First Sight, was sent out a short-priced favourite for the Westbury Handicap, but caused a lot of trouble at the barrier, and eventually was soundly beaten. Rosebush went out very fast, and led from Broad Acre, Le Champ, Miss Pat, and Keddar. Rosebush was still in charge turning for home, but then Broad Acre took command, and he went on to win well by nearly two lengths from Keddar, who was the same distance in front of Carrigallen, with the favourite fourth, and Rosebush and Abbess next. STORMY JUST GETS THERE Stormy was made favourite for the Clanboyne Handicap, and in a punishing finish he won narrowly from Assurance. Polar and Huikai led most of the way from Stormy and Alyson, with Assurance well placed among the others. Stormy took charge at the entrance to the straight, and Assurance joined in. A great finish ended in Stormy just getting home by a head
from Assurance, while Polar was a length away third, and Huikai was a fair fourth. Alyson and Black Mint were next. ONE FOR HENNA Blimp was favourite for the Christmas Handicap, but was unlucky. Tanagra led to the straight from Royal Picture, Kindle, Cool Card, and Blimp. Blimp was squeezed back, and Henna came through, to win by half a length from Cool Card, with Capitulation right up third. Blimp was fourth, and Historic next. ARROW LAD AT LAST Sent out a good favourite for the Kawau Handicap, Lady Cavendish was early in the lead, and was with Duke Abbey and Epistle at the straight entrance, but she failed to stay, and Arrow Lad finished best, to win by a head from Epistle. Covent Garden and Duke Abbey were a couple of lengths back next.
