AT HASTINGS

The card for the two days of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's summer fixture, to be held to-morrow and on Monday, is much above the average, and with fair fields all round there should be some interesting racing. The Jumpers’ Flat has the usual riding restrictions, and -with Alan McDonald most likely having the ride on RED FUCHSIA he should be heavily supported, together with HYMGREAT. Spearmiss won a Maiden at Waipukurau and is not eligible for this event to-morrow. NAHI ran a third and second at the same meeting and HIGH HEATHER a second, and they may be the favourites. QUEEN’S CHOICE and EPISTLE, a winner at Manawatu, will probably be the medium of solid speculation in the Hastings Handicap. The three top-weights in the Juvenile, Tea Miss, Millais and Monetize, together with Irish Court, will be the

possibles. Probably TEA MISS and MILLAIS will be best suited by the two-furlong straight. There are only half a dozen in the President’s Handicap, and two of them are recent winners—Butterscotch. who scored in the principal event at Waipukurau, and Thurnbell, a winner at Awapuni. WAICULLUS and BUTTERSCOTCH promise to be the favourites. They are not a particularly brilliant lot of hacks left in the Waipatu Welter, and the penalised ATARERIA and COURAGEOUS, who ran up to his name at Feilding, will not lack support. The good straight will suit thes© two game finishers. MOUNTAIN HEATH recently won three races on end, and therefore he will probably dispute favouritism with the brilliant three-year-old CHELONE in tli© Havelock Flying. The open sprint is the final event on the card. This is the Stewards’ Han-

dicap, in which SARCHEE and PLAIN SAILING are both about due for an improvement in form, for they can go a merry six when in the mood. Tli© acceptances are as follows, the weights shown including th© rehandicaps of recent winners, who were Lipsol, Butterscotch, 1 Thurnbell, Atareria, Chelone and Royal Time. Winners the last day at Awapuni will no doubt have, their penalties announced to-day:— The acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting on January 2 are: OTATARA JUMPERS FLAT 11 miles Red Fuchsia 10 10 Braeman ..95 Garzon .... 10 5 Panchito ... 9 5 Hy mgr eat . . 9 10 Martona ... 9 0 MAHORA MAIDEN 5 furlongs ,
