THROUGH WATCHING ADVERTISING DISPLAY

STRANGE ACCIDENT OCCURS An extraordinary accident was the outcome of an enterprising venture in advertising, says a London writer. A crowd had assembled outside the window of a draper and costumier’s shop to witness a display that had been attracting considerable attention. Through a black silk screen a girl’s legs clad in silk stockings was performing Charleston steps, and various lines of hosiery were advertised at either side of the living model. Two girls had been taking it in turns to give the display, and when the acci-. dent happened the crowd was awaiting the restart of the exhibition after the tea interval. Suddenly those at the back of the crowd began to move forward. Women and children shrieked, and then there was a crash of breaking glass, and the crowd fell in a wild surge into the window amid a shower of broken glass. The explanation given is that the crowd had grown so large that many had been forced off the pavement, and that when an omnibus passed those in the street became alarmed and pushed forward to get on to the pavement. Private motor-cars helped to take some of the more seriously hurt to the hospital. Twelve altogether had to receive treatment. but only two were sufficiently badly hurt to warrant their being detained. This accident will no doubt be eagerly seized upon by those who frown upon the Charleston as a further proof of the evil to which it may lead. r-r Vr -K Vr rH r’.t ~r -k ?r %• rr ?r
