CONVERTING TO OIL-BURNERS.— The Canadian Government, according- to cabled advice, has decided to convert its remaining coal-burning steamers trading with Australia into oil-burners, for reasons of economy and expeditious service. Brisbane will continue as at present to be the first port of discharge and the last port of loading. Seven steamers are normally engaged by the Canadian Government Merchant Marine in the Australian trade. Most of these are to be withdrawn to replace on the Canada-America-United Kingdom routes the oil-burners which are being diverted to Australia. The first of these is the Canadian Highlander, which was due at Brisbane on October S, from Montreal, and she will be followed by the Canadian Victor, which, however, is a modern coal-burner, and the Canadian Transporter.
