POLICE APPRECIATE CITIZEN’S ASSISTANCE
The police have many friends in Auckland and they are not slow to show their gratitude of a good deed. Last November a thief and his confederate visited a shop in Karangahape Road and stole a number of articles, including some crockery. The thieves were observed by a constable and bolted. One threw down the parcel containing the crockery and his companion bolted down a side street in another direction. Mr. J. H. Holt, who was passing by, quickly seized the position and set out in pursuit of one of the thieves while the constable was chasing the other. Mr. Holt caught one thief after a rough-and-tumble scrap and in doing so his clothes were damaged. He held on until another constable arrived and took the thief in charge. Next day the thief was convicted at the Magistrate’s Court. The Newton police, in whose district the crime was committed, appreciated Mr. Holt’s example of civic spirit and among themselves they subscribed toward a small gift, which was presented him at the Newton Station recently.
