PRINCE EDWARD
“CARNIVAL TIME’’ Presenting a revue which is as varied, as musical and as spectacular as most of the big musical comedies, the Royal Australian Sunbeams began the second week of their Auckland season last evening. There were few vacant seats at the Prince Edward Theatre when “Carnival Time” was presented for the first time. There are 35 performers in the company, and not one of them is a “passenger.” From the tiniest of the Merry Twinklers to the solo danseuse, they are artists, perfectly trained. “Carnival Time” has excellent setting and frocking, and it goes well from the opening chorus to the finale, “Good-bye and Good Luck to You.” Harry Ussher, the boy soprano, was a big favourite, and his singing of “When Mother’s Eyes are Smiling” and “Yesterday,” was not enough to satisfy the audience—they demanded more, lots more. There was a spectacular ballet, “Butterflies and Roses,” a colourful and pleasing effort, and an Eastern speciality featured the girls in a serpentine dance. The infant comedian, Jackie Clarke, was delightfully funny, some of his songs being “She Knows Her Onions” and “Mother, Send Ethel Home.” Somersaulting like Catherine wheels, the Acrobatic Sunbeams did some amazing turns. Their balancing was of a standard to “beat the circus.” Baby Doreen sang prettily and led choruses.
There was a complete change of picture programme, a thrilling drama, “The Frontiersman,” being the main item.
