CHAMPIONSHIP BOWLS

AUCKLAND RINKS ELIMINATION COMMENCED Weather conditions yesterday delayed inter-section play in the Auckland Bowling Centre rink championships until the afternoon, when only one round could be played, rain preventing continuance at about the second head in the second round.. The green played very well but was heavy, and the heads were close. first round Results of the first round were:— Brittain, G. Gladding, W. Coltman, Lamb (Carlton), 20, v. Kennedy, Green, Macklow, Wright (Onehunga), 19. Munro, Bilkey, Keith, Armstrong (Pukkohe), 20, v. Frost, Rowe, Wrightson, G. Hosking (Carlton), 14. Sidler, Buckle, Pearce, Randell (Rocky Nook), 20, v. Harrison, Wheelan, Greening, Taylor (Epsom), 18. Anderson, Wise, Maher, J. Hosking (West End), 19, v. Clark, Roberts, Hawken, Ramsay (Dominion Road), IS. Bates, Deare, Kilgour, H. Clarke (Carlton), a bye. SECOND ROUND The second round commenced to-day at Remuera, under excellent weather conditions, the green playing very well. As a result of this morning’s play Taylor, of Epsom, and Wright, of Onehunga, lost their second lives, and are out of the championship, Lamb, of Carlton, being the only one with two lives left, though Randell, who won yesterday, had a bye this morning. The Hosking-Taylor match was a good game up to the 10th head, and the scores were even at the conclusion of the 15th, after which Hosking scored on the next four heads. The closest game was that between Armstrong and Lamb. When the eighth head had been played the points were 11 to 2 in favour of Lamb, but at the end of the 13th head Armstrong liad recovered to 10 to 14. Lamb won the next three heads and then led 16 to 12, following which Armstrong scored for three heads, making him 15 to 16, and at the 21st head Lamb took out Armstrong’s second shot and made a tie. Playing the bye, Lamb won by one shot after a very exciting finish, the"jack hanging on the edge of the ditch from Lamb’s shot and Armstrong just failing to reach it. The Wright-Ramsey match did not see anything sensational, but the two teams played almost shot for shot right through, Ramsey playing some fine saving shots. Wright was leading when the last head was commenced and with his last bowl on the last head was short, allowing Ramsey to gain two points and the match. The main interest was in the Hosk-ing-Clarke match, where -Hosking was eight down at the conclusion of the ninth head. From that stage onward there was a most interesting fight, but Hosking was unable to recover the position, the scores being 20 to 9 in Clarke’s favour at the 19th head, Hosking giving up at the next head, with the scores 20 to 10. The second round resulted: G. Hosking (Carlton), 22, v. Taylor (Epsom), 14: Lamb (Carlton) beat Armstrong (Carlton) by one point, playing off a tie of 16 all; Clarke (Carlton), 20, v. J. Hosking (West End), 10; Ramsey (Dominion Road), 19, v. Wright (Onehunga), 18. THIRD ROUND Ramsay 11, v. Hosking (Carlton), 18. Clarke 21, v. Randell 23.
