PICK-POCKETS DEPORTED MEN WITH BAD RECORDS APPREHENDED IN TIME THE three Australian pickpockets who came to Auckland for the holidays have had small chancr of making their visit profitable. They were deported to Sydney to-day. At the Police -Court this morning, the three, Albert Veran, aged 30, William Stone, aged 27, and Norman Burgess, aged 34, appeared for sentence on charges of being idle and disorderly. Veran and Burgess had also pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to steal £l. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused were all professional pickpockets who had served sentences in different Australian States. The Magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean: They are all prohibited immigrants, but they seem to have been apprehended before they did anything serious. The best thing is to send them back to Australia. Addressing the accused, he told them they were liable to six months’ imprisonment for landing in New Zealand. They were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence any time within two years. A deportation order was also made. They left Auckland to-day by the Ulimaroa.
