Ironing in Hot Weather ADVANTAGE OF ELECTRIC IRON Who really enjoys ironing? I wonder how many people could truthfully answer "I do.” Had the question been asked before electric irons were thought of, then the number of those who do enjoy ironing would have been considerably smaller, says a writer in “The Unit.” The electric iron really does turn ironing from a hot and troublesome job into a cool and pleasant one, and there is no marching backwards and forwards to and from the stove; and no smutty or dirty irons to spoil the freshly-washed clothes; and no soaping the bottom of the iron to make it run smoothly. No. All one has to do is simply connect the iron to the electric plug, switch on, and in a very few moments the iron is ready for use. A great many electric irons now have a thumb-switch attached to the flex, so that when the iron is sufficiently hot the current may be switched off without even moving away from the table. Another advantage is that one does not have to bother about an iron stand, because electric irons are made now so that they rest back on the handle while not in immediate use; this saves scorched ironing blankets and —- scorched clothes. A thumb rest is provided on all the newest types of

irons, so that really and truly every little bit of exertion is saved by the electric iron. One can even sit down to iron if tired, and the iron may be gently guided over the clothes, especially if a fairly heavy one is used, as it then needs no pressing, but simply guiding. Naturally, there is a right and a wrong way of using an electric iron; so for anyone who is just starting off with an electric iron I will tell them how I use mine. When I am quite ready to start my ironing I switch the iron on. Then 1 get my ironing board or table ready. By that time my iron is about hot enough for small woollies, such as socks or stockings. I carry on with these for a few minutes, then my iron is ready for the “specials,” so the woollies are put on one side, and materials that need a really hot iron are attended to. After the iron has been really hot for five minutes the current should be switched off, and the heat in the iron will carry on for some time, after which the current may be switched on again—and so on. When all the special garments are attended to I switch off the electricity for good, and return to finish my woollens, etc. In this, wav very little current is used, and nobody is hot, cross or tired. In fact, the ironing is so simple that a child would delight in ironing the “hankies” and would be able to do them perfectly without any fear of either the handkerchiefs or the fingers getting scorched. In fact, “mother” could easily pass on that small—but fiddling—job after the current has been switched off.
