N.Z. CHESS TOURNEY

KELLING AND DAVIES UNBEATEN Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The New Zealand chess tournament was continued to-day. In round 3, McDermid created a surprise in drawing against Severne by a neat sacriFisher, who is still suffering from the effects of a motor accident which, occurred on his way down from Wanganui, has not yet shown his best. Kelling played a game in the fourth round against Summers for the latter’s convenience. Severne v. McDermid (Four Knights game).—The game developed evenly and slowly, several pieces being exchanged in the middle game. Afterwards Severne won a pawn and was threatening to win another pawn, when McDermid cleverly sacrificed his knight for two pawns to secure a draw by perpetual check with his queen. Davies v. Friberg (French defence). —After the adjournment the position became very complicated and Friberg failing to make the best defence allowed Davies to work up a fine mating combination, Friberg resigning on the 36th move. Kelling v. Neville.—The former won. Fairburn v. Fisher (Queen’s Gambit declined).—Fairburn tried a novel variation in opening and the position became slightly in his favour. Later Fisher made a weak move, giving Fairburn a passed pawn in the end game which was sufficient to give Fairburn his first win so far in the tourney. Summers v. Kelling (centre counter). —The opening was on usual lines and at move 22 Summers let a pawn go for an attack W'hich did not reach its objective and the game then drifted against him. Shortly afterwards he lost an exchange. Keeping up the

pressure, Kelling won a rook and Summers resigned a hopeless game at move 38. The positions of the players are as follow: Kelling and Davies, 3 wins, no losses: Neville and Friberg, 2 wins, 1 loss; Severne, IS wins, h loss (one to play); McDermid, IS wins, losses; Fairburn and Summers, 1 win. 2 losses; Fisher, no wins, 2 losses; Joyce, no wins, 4 losses.
