BOOKMAKER in court IMPRISONMENT threat » D ID WELL DURING HOLIDAYS” Robert Ryan, aged 58, a bookmaker, charged at the Police Court to-day with keeping a gaming house at 63 Queen Street, was fined £IOO. jjTAN pleaded guilty to the charge. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused was carrying on business as a bookmaker, and a quantity of bettin? material was found on the premises. “He Is in a good financial position, and has done very well over the holidays," said .'lr. Cummings. He also mentioned that Ryan was 3ned £IOO for a similar offence in September, 1925. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean: You know, Ryan, you are liable to imprisonment. “I know that,” replied accused. "Is there any reason why I should not impose that penalty?” asked the magistrate. “I’m an old man,” said Ryan, “and I have a large family to support.’’ ~ The fine was then imposed, and Ryan gave a sigh of relief as he left the court room.
