votes were cast. These indicate that Mr. Alfred Smith, Governor of New York State, is the favourite among the Democrats, with Mr. J. A. Reed, member of the
Mr. Al. Smith Senate for Missouri, second, and the- former senator, Mr. Meredith, third. The President, Mr. Coolidge, continues to be a strong favourite among the Republicans, with Mr. F. O. Lowden, a former Governor of Illinois, second, and the Secretary for Com merce, Mr. H. C. Hoover, third.—A. and N.Z.
HOOVER INELIGIBLE?
NEW YORK, Tuesday. The political enemies of Mr. H. Hoover, Secretary for Commerce, claim that he cannot qualify as a candidate for the Presidency because he lived in Condon . to 1917. Nobody Is eligible for the Presidency unless he has been domiciled in the United States for 14 years before nomination.
Mr. Hoover has been regarded as the leading contender for the Republican nomination next year.
