AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING MAKES BIG ADVANCE

RECORDS BROKEN By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The past year has shown considerable progress in shipping in Australia. There is much evidence that the industry will generally continue to advance in 1928. Trade in the overseas, inter-State and New South Wales coastal services has been satisfactory. During the year ended on June 30 a record quantity of cargo from overseas was landed. Merchandise shipped by vessels on the Australian register was greater than ever before. With one or two minor exceptions, oversea freight rates for general cargo remained unchanged. Apart from the watersiders’ strike recently, trade was not hampered during the year to such an extent as in preceding years.—A. and NZ.
