THE POST OFFICE AND THE RAILWAYS
IT has been a Merry Christmas for the general public; for such public services as the Post and Telegraphs Department and the Railways Department it has been an exceedingly busy one. If there is happiness in the realisation of work well done, it must have been also a happy one.
The immense amount of mail matter and of telegraphic messages handled this Christmas entailed strenuous work on the part of the officers of the department. It was a strain greater than any hitherto experienced, but they came splendidly through it, serving the public truly, and proud of their ability to do so. Not only did the indoor staff render splendid service. The burdened postman, journeying with swift steps from door to door, a glad message in every pipe of his whistle, and the telegraph messenger, shattering with his speed the myth that he is a laggard, excelled their own previous records. Even on Christmas morning, the delivery of telegrams was continued. If ever men and boys earned their Christmas dinner, they were these. Nor should the strenuous labours of the railway employees be passed over. Despite the rush of worrying crowds, they were invariably courteous and helpful to the traveller. A word, too, may be said for the tramway employees, who were in every respect “up to the mark.” All these servants of the public proved themselves good servants, indeed, bearing “the heat and burden of the day” without falter. They have the strenuous days of the New Year celebrations before them, and may be depended upon to emerge as well from that ordeal as from the hurly-burly of Christmas. As they serve the public, so let the public consider them.
