DID SPARROW CAUSE COLLEGE TOWER FIRE?
MYSTERIOUS OUTBREAK Did a nest-building sparrow, with a wax match picked up from the street below, cause a fire in the tower of the Workingmen’s College, Latrobe Street, Melbourne, recently? It is a possibility, according to the Acting Fire Chief, who commented on the mysterious nature of the outbreak. “It was a fairly hot day,” he said, “and the heat of the sun, I consider, beating on the 90ft tower, would have been sufficient to light a wax match brought up by a bird.” Another possible cause was a spark from a neighbouring chimney fire. This solution of the mystery is discounted by the fact that no near-by chimney fire was reported. “There is nothing suspicious about the fire,” added M,r. Wilkins. “Any - one wishing to get into the tower from the outside would need to use a. ladder. The tower is seldom entered, except when flags are to be flown on some important occasion, and only then by the caretaker.” The damage is estimated at i.
