DEVICO’S COMET?

NEW THEORY ABOUT SKJELLERUP GERMAN OBSERVATIONS By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. BERLIN, Tuesday. The Skjellerup comet has been sighted by the Potsdam Observatory and the Bergerdorf Observatory, Hamburg, where it is regarded as identical with the periodic comet discovered by Devico in 1844. With this Potsdam is inclined to agree, arguing that the loss of the Devico comet was probably due to its being deflected from the regular orbits by planetary disturbances. Hamburg Observatory reports that the apparent course of the comet is somewhat different from what the observations in the Southern Hemisphere suggested, as the comet did not come so far into the northern sky as was anticipated. When it was last seen at Hamburg it was 12 degree above the sun. It is difficult to distinguish it with the naked eye, but the telescope shows a diaboio-shaped mass, forming a head and a marked tail two degrees long, pointing upward and to the right.—A. and N.Z.
