AIR TRAGEDY FEARED
PLANE ABSENT SINCE FRIDAY NEW YORK TO NEWFOUNDLAND By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. *- m - NEW YORK, Monday. 8 dlri £ l ble Los Angeles was ordered to leave the New Jersey flying-field to-day, to tour New England waters, m an • attempt to find a trace of the plane which, with a woman Mid three men aboard, left New York for Newfoundland on Friday afternoon, and has not since been seen.
was an unconfirmed report that distress signals were heard from a plane at Sable Island, Nova Scotia. The alleged message merely said there was something wrong, but gave no location. Storm interference prevented continued communication. •A. message from Washington says that coastguard headquarters have ™^ erec * a searc b of the area within 500 miles of Cape Cod. The machine, a Sikorsky, amphibian, contained Mrs. Frances Grayson, Lieutenant Oskar Omdal, of the Norwegian Navy, as pilot, Mr. Brice Goldsborough, navigator and radio engineer, and Mr. Fred Koehler, mechanic. An airplane left New York on Sun-
. day in search of the missing aviators, but it returned with nothing to report. The friends of the air-woman financed the relief expedition. It was hoped that Mrs. Grayson might un : . expectedly have decided to make a non-stop flight across the Atlantic, direct from New York, but this hope was shattered when the officials at the Croydon Airdrome, London, announced that no wireless reports had been received indicating that the Dawn was headed for Europe. The employees of the French cable telegraph station at Orleans, Massa- ! chusetts, heard the airplane on Friday ' night. They expressed the belief that , it had turned back after passing Cape Cod owing to its petrol supply being exhausted.—A. and N.Z.
