TELEGRAPH FIGURES OFFICE ESTABLISHES RECOM) The “Merry Christmas” rwsii established a nsw record this year for the Auckland Telegraph and Telephone Department. For the three days, from Thursday to Saturday, a total of 119,748 messages was sent over the wire. Of these only 13,538 were telephone calls. Last year the total figures were 115,011. INURING the whole of last week the telegraph office was particularly busy and on Wednesday 21,874 me* sages were handled. The office forwarded 4,317 messages, received 7,661 and transmitted 9,893. When the office closed for at 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve it was found that last year’s record had been passed. Operators worked at tw speed, and at 2 a.m. on Christmas morning there were only 500 messages left for Christchurch and 200 for Dwk edin. These w T ere through by 3.30 an, and the office was clear. Despite the enormous number cf messages and the speed at whtc* the operators worked not one message went astray. During the rush period between 13# and 130 operators were at work, it addition to eight on cables and one foi the wireless plant. Messrs. G. W. A. Clark and R. St Doull, senior supervisors, watched oves the office during the rush period. The Pacific Cable handled a large number of messages, of which a considerable proportion consisted Christmas greetings.
