Mr. Kenneth Brampton and Miss Eila Brampton are spending - the holidays at Ivawau, Mr. and Mrs. George Marriner and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Massey have left by motor for Rotorua, where they will spend the holidays. The Misses Ida and Elsa Bass and Miss E. Cardno, of Epsom Avenue, are leaving to-day on a motor-trip through the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Rothschild of Wellington, are visiting Auckland and are staying at the Hotel Mon Desir, Takapuna. Mrs. Spillane. of Wanganui, is> a visitor to Auckland, and is accompanied by Miss Marjorie Allomes. Mrs. Carrick Robertson and family are staying at their summer residence, Minnehaha Avenue, Takapuna. Mrs. J. Keating, of Wellington, is a visitor to Auckland. Miss Eaird. of Taumarunui, is spending a short holiday visit in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. W. Wilson, of Rernuera, have left by motor for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Alison are spending the holidays at Mon Desir, Takapuna. Mr. and Mrs. Amers, of Stratford, are visiting Auckland at present. Mrs. Shayle-George and the Misses Shayle-George, of Auckland, are on a visit to Mrs. Sliayle-George’s daughter, Mrs. A. J. Curtis, in Wellington. Before returning to the North, Mrs. ShayleGeorge may visit her son at Lyttelton.
ENGAGEMENTS The engagement is announced of Philip Arthur, third son of the late Mr. W. B. Thompson, Kona Bay, Wellington. to Beryl Cicely, younger daughter of Mr. and the late Mrs. G. W. Astley, Seatoun, Wellington. The engagement is announced of Flora, eldest daughter of LieutenantColonel A. G. McKenzie, D. 5.0., and Mrs. McKenzie, of Kaukapakapa, to Frank Gilbert, second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Anderson, of Esplanade Road, Mount Eden. An engagement is announced between Captain Herbert Alexander Macphersori, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Macpherson, of Headingley Hall, Leeds, and Miss Cicely Beresford, second daughter of the late Mr. A. F. Fitzherbert and of Mrs. Fitzherbert, of Nettleworth, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
CHRISTMAS DANCE FUNCTION ON SATURDAY High revel was held in the Masonic Hall on Christmas Eve, when a delightful dance was given by Mr. G. H. Bassant, manager of the Grand Hotel, and Mr. R. O. Chesney, manager of the Hotel Cargen. The hall was beautifully decorated in a scheme of cyclamen and mauve, which was shaded to a delicate pink, and ag'ainst the walls tropical plants and foliage greatly enhanced the scene. Overhead lines of wisteria were strung and deep rose-tinted shades nrovided beautiful lighting effects. At the entrance a box hedge and tall pedestal made a screen in which were twined pink trailing convolvulus. Original and attractive favours were a feature of the evening, and the colours of paper hats and floral emblems made a striking note as did the streamers and the parosols. CHRISTMAS BRIDES ANDERSON—VANSTONE A very charming wedding was solemnised at St. John’s Church, Opotiki, between Miss Rosa-Linda Jessie Vanstone, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Vanstone, Otara Road, Opotiki, and Mr. Thomas Anderson, only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Anderson, of Port Chalmers. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. David Hird, M.A. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a frock of powder-blue georgette trimmed with hand-embroidered medallions. She wore a beige hat to tone, and carried a shower bouquet of hydrangeas and gladiolas. Miss Rosina Vanstone, sister of the bride, attended as bridesmaid, and wore a frock of beige crepe de chine with hat to match. She carried a bouquet of cornflowers and cerise stocks. Mr. Thomas Wallis acted as best man. FILLEUI McEWAN A wedding that created considerable interest took place on Wednesday last at the • Knox Presbyterian Church, I-luntly, the bride being Miss Mary Greta McEwan, daughter of Mr. Robert McEwan, of Pukekapia, Huntly, and Mr. Gerald Roxley Filleul, son of Mr. Richard George Filleul, of Nelson. The bride was given away by her father, and was attended by Miss Ella Dorothy Rust, of Whangarei, as bridesmaid, Mr. Len Green, of Huntly, being best man. The Rev. M. Gibb officiated, and after the ceremony the wedding breakfast was served in the supper room of the Town Hall, where the usual toasts were honoured. The presents were numerous and valuable. VON STURMER—JONES A gown of white taffetas, banded with- silver lace was worn by Corrie,
the elder daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. A. O. Jones, of Hamilton, when she was married at First Church, Hamilton, recently to Heaton, the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. J. von Sturmer, of Auckland. The fully choral service was conducted by the Rev. L. M. Rogers. The bride wore a beautiful veil of embroidered tulle over her dainty gown and carried a sheaf of Christmas lilies. She was given away by her brother. The bridesmaids. Miss Poppy Cliff and Miss Gladys Jones, sister of the bride, were dressed alike in frocks of apple green georgette over silver lame. Their silver-grey crinoline hats were trimmed with coral pink and they carried bouquets of pink carnations and sweet peas. Mr. I. MacPherson, of Palmerston North, acted as best man, and Mr. P. Jones was groomsman.
HOLIDAY REVEL DIXIELAND CARNIVAL Playing a very big part in the holiday festivities was the Christmas Eve carnival dance at Dixieland on Saturday evening. There was the usual large crowd of dancers, and with the new Eastern decorative scheme carried out on appropriate lines, the carnival spirit was very much in evidence. Under the direction of Mr. N. Loveridge the Dixieland staff left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the carnival, and with the music up to the best “Clyde Howley” standard, dancers experienced little difficulty in observing the occasion in fitting style. Among those present were: Mrs. G. Wray, bouffant frock of spring green taffeta. Mrs. Frame, silved beaded black georgette frock. Mrs. Alexander Frame, old x’ose crepe de chine. Mrs. Ronald James,. daffodil ninon and silver lace. Mrs. Irvine (Wellington), ivory frock of mariette. Mrs. A. Donald, geranium charmeuse. Mrs. R. C. Lawrence (Taranaki), powder blue taffetas. Mrs. Goodman, wild rose chenille. Mrs. Snow, azure blue georgette and radium lace. Mrs. T. George, gold tissue and lace frock, with pastel-shaded streamers. Miss Emerson, shrimp ninon, and creme shawl. Miss Jean Macindoe, ivory georgette, with opalescent beading. Miss Nancy Martin, French embroidered frock of white taffeta. Miss Audrey Bayly, frock of French grey taffeta and ivory lace. Miss Janet Clarkson, shaded green beaded frock. Miss Inskip, frock of peach georgette. Miss Galbraith, black satin frock, and cyclamen shawl. Miss McDuff, cameo pink georgette, inlet with silver panels. Miss Phyllis Hayward, foxglove crepe de chine period frock.
