CAROL CONCERT

BAND PERFORMANCE A carol concert given by the Municipal Band attracted a large attendance at the Town Hall on Saturday evening, when a very enjoyable enter* tainment was provided. The band opened the programme with Suppe’s “Poet and Peasant,” obviously a warm favourite, followed by Gounod’s ‘‘Bells Across the Snow,” which also was well received. A selection by Montague Ewing based upon w r ell-know r n compositions, including ‘‘The Toreador’s Song,” from “Carmen,” Mendelssohn’s ‘Spring *Song,” Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude,” the “Gavotte” from “Mignon,” “Miserere” scene from “J 1 Trovatore,” and sections from Chopin’s “Prelude,” Opus 28, No. 20 proved a very popular choice and was perhaps tlio best band item of the. evening. Rossini’s “William Tell” overture and the “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah” were also contributed by the band.

“The Harmony Eight,” a well-bal-anced and effective combination, made its first appearance at this concert and provided a number of very enjoyable carols. The vocalists were: Mrs. Claudo Northage and Misses Gladys Hosking (sopranos), Maida Davison and Ruby Moselen (contraltos) and Messrs, A. L. McPherson, Frank Ridgway (tenors), Messrs. Kenneth J. Deilow and Roy Stephenson (basses). Their numbers included “Christians Awake," “Hark the Herald Angels Sing, ’ “O, Come All Ye Faithful.” "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks,” “Good King Wenceslas” and “The First Noel.” A soprano solo, “Down in the Forest” (Ronald) was sung with pleasing effect by Miss Gladys Hosking, and a contralto solo, “St. Nicholas’s Day m the Morning” (Martin), by Miss Maida Davison. A cornet solo by Mr Fred Bowes (“The Holy City”)’ euphonium solo by Mr. J. Purchase (“The Song of the Clock”) and a flute solo by Mr. Hal C. McLennan (“A Mountain Idyll”) were all well received. Mr. Leo Whittaker provided artistic accompaniments.
