Back to Ellerslie
To-Morrow’s Big Programme
THERE will be racing again at Ellerslie to-morrow, and with excellent fields engaged another fine day’s sport is assured. A review of the card, together with the list of acceptances, is given below.
hard ground is no doubt responsible for the small fields in a couple of races, but nevertheless there*, is sufficient material throughout the whole of the programme to make another interesting day’s sport. The first event is the Fergusson Handicap, and here there are Golden Armour, who will be a better filly for the run slie had on Saturday. Saucy Lass, Paper Boy, Abbey Day, Singleton and The Immigrant will also be better suited by the smaller field. The summing-up in this and other races is given below. Five ‘only remain in the weight-for-age event, the King’s Plate, and Grand Knight will be racing over his best distance. Aussie may go for the sprint, and the mile at present may find Gascony Out. Lysander will go well in a small field over a mile, and his sameness may pull him through. Martarma is a good three-year-old, and the mile will suit him. The Cambridge stable holds a strong hand in the Ponsonby Hurdles with Wedding March and King’s Guard, and Beau Cavalier and Karamu will be hard put to it to go with either of them. SUMMER CUP FIELD There is a nice field in the Summer Cup, Battlement, third in the Auckland Cup, will go another good race if caught in the mood, but he is erratic Grand Knight will go for the King’s Plate, and Mosaic, King Lu, In the Shade and Pegaway read nicely. Mundane has been doing great track work, and she may be the most difficult to dispose of. There is almost as good a field in the Electric Handicap as there was in the Railway, and with the likes of Eulalie, Aussie, Nancy Lee, Money Order, Cimabue, Joy King, Paganelli and Paperchase engaged, there will b* a torrid pace set.
In the Criterion Handicap Freehold went too badly the first day to be recommended, although of course that was not his true form. Prodice, Marion’s Birthday, Patodawn, Maunaena and Pari are the likely ones. The Waitemata Handicap has attracted but half a dozen, and it is probable that the small field will play right into Royal Doulton’s hands—or feet. Bold Front and Nassock are fair escorts over the distance. After his dual success at Felding a month ago, backers will want to be on Ruanui, but others to be considered are Siaosi, Doree, Ti Tree and Archeno, the lastnamed putting up a good gallop last week. Summed up, horses that will come in for heavy support to-morrow are the following: Fergusson Handicap, one mile.— Golden Armour and Saucy Lass. King's . Plate, one mile.-— Lysander and Grand Knight. Ponsonby Hurdles, two miles.—Wedding March—King’s Guard Bracket and Karamu. Summer Cup, 1\ miles.— Mandanc and In the Shade.
Criterion Handicap, six furlongs.— Marion’s Birthday and Prodice. Waitemata Handicap. 1$ miles.— Royal Doulton and Bold Front. Electric Handicap, six furlongs.— Eulalie and Aussie. Plunket Handicap, one mile.— Ruanui and Doree. Grand Knight was accepted for in the Summer Cup, but was scratched 20 minutes later—at 12.20 p.m. The acceptances for to-morrow are as follows:
