Good Racing at Ashburton
PLUTO WINS CUP JEAN MCELWYN AT LAST (Special to THE SUN.} ASHBURTON, Monday. The Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer fixture was held in beautiful weather and in -V- presence of a very large attendance. The track was frst and the racing full of interest. The totalisator turnover reached £20,236 10s. Backers were wide of the mark, only two favourites being successful. DORIS POINTER DOES BEST Over the first half-mile of the Advance Handicap Peter Daunt, lone, Pet Locanda and Aleron was the order, the distance being covered in 1.10 1-5. Going along the back lone dropped out and Doris Pointer joined t]fe front division, and they were at the mil© in 2.19 1-5, where Aleron and Doris Pointer left their opponents. Doris Pointer was in front at the distance, at which stage both pacers were under pressure. Doris Pointer then made a break, and Aleron resumed the lead, but Doris Pointer came again and beat Aleron by three-parts of a length. Pet Locanda was 12 lengths further* awav third, being just in front of Peter Daunt. The last half-mile was done in 1.10. Doris Pointer is an aged mare by Logan Pointer from Little Doris, dam of Little Logan. She is owned by Mr. J. McKendry and was driven by her trainer, B. Grice. FAVOURITE SCORES But for breaking a fin-long from homo in the Mitcham Handicap, Fairligrht would have been first instead of third. The winner, Kempton, owned and bred by Mr. H. F. Kicoll, owes his victory to solidity. He tired in disappointing fashion over the concluding stages. Ho trotted his first mile in 2.25 2-5, so it was not the extreme speed he went in the early stages that caused him to weaken in the straight. .Nancy McKinney, Admiral Bingen and Homeleigh Girl failed to leave the mark. The winner is by Nelson Bingen from Pearl Pointer, and was driven by his trainer, £>. Warren. PLUTO ALL THE WAY Mr. W. J. Gudsell’s five-year-old gelding Pluto, by Denver I-luon, dam Princess Dolly, led all the way In the Ashburton Trotting Cup to win with a good deal in hand in the fast time of 4.30 3-5. Pie did the first eight furlongs in 2.17, mile and a-half in 3.24, finishing his last four furlongs in 1.6 3-5. Genuine broke at_ the start and Colene Pointer, driven by her owner, was never prominent. Pan Yan and Daphne- do Oro did particularly well. Pan Yan beating the three-year-oid filly by two lengths for second honours. High Jinks went a solid race, and Acre did well for a mile and three-quarters, where he commenced to tire. Kotuku Jack gave a promising display, but Avenger and Bing Boy failed to get on the journey safely, and were soon out of court. EDWARDS ARRIVES Immediately the straight was reached in the McLean Handicap 13dw ards took Kulnine to the front and came on to win at his leisure by two lengths. In the early stages Okoura was in charge, but with six furlongs disposed of, King Sandy, Jean MeElwyn, Kulnine, Wee Gus and Native Queen ran up to him. Jean McElwyn was first in line for home and then Kulnine and Wee Gus put in their claim, and from there on the trio had the decision of place moneys to themselves, and although Kulnine won very easily Jean McElwyn only beat Wee Gus by a. neck. Vestas, who was favourte, went away slowly and failed to make much impression on his field and finished fourth. Kulnine is owned by Mr. E. Rutherford and is by I.ogan pointer. MISHAP MARS CONTEST An accident in front of the stand marred the contest for the Midsummer Handicap, Tennis, Satin Princess, Sadie Huon, Jackie Audubon, and Bay Nut coming to grief. No serious harm was received by either horse or horsemen. Master Theckla then took charge, and went on to score a very easy win from Erin’s Royal, who outstayed Joicks for second money. Our Bird filled fourth place. Master Theckla scored at New Brighton, and he is by Brent Locanda from Lady Theckla, and is owned by E. C. McDermott, who drove him. EPIGRAMS GOOD FORM After a tussle over the last furlong Epigram beat Harold Burwood in the Boxing Handicap, there being only a head between the pair at the end. Zenith made the running from Lord Bingen, Locanda General, and Harold Burwood, with Epigram at the head of Haunui and Donside. Zenith was first in line for home, but at the distance Harold Burwood and Epigram drew up to him. Then Locanda General joined issue, and in a snappy finish Epigram got his head-in front of Harold Burwood a stride from the post. This makes Epigram’s third win this month. He is by Brent Locanda from Belette, and was driven by G. McKendry, who trains him. OUTSIDER PREVAILS Well driven, an outsider in Peter the First got home by a head from Little Johnnie in the Winslow Handicap. Sarsaparilla was in front early, and when he obtained a big lead from the field he made a bad break after going four furlongs, and lost a lot of ground. Bon Elect lost his driver early in the contest, and Bon Wood spoilt his chance by misfiring in his gait. At the start Fairlight and Nelson Ata were close to the leader, for a mile and alialf, where Nelson Ata retired beaten. Fairlight made a break in the straight, and then finished within a length of the winner. Little Johnnie, who is an improved trotter, went a solid race, and so did the winner, who is an aged gelding by Petereta from Pansy. He is trained by J. Palmer. JEAN McELWYN BREAKS THE ICE Ridden a clever race by G. Caddy, the four-year-old mare Jean McElwyn beat Native Queen by a clear length in the Final Handicap. Kate Thorpe went away with a big lead, with Jean McElwyn doing her work on the bit at the head of Killinchy, Gibraltar, and Native Queen. Round the far turn Killinchy went into second place. On reaching the head of the stretch Caddy brought Jean McElwyn through on the rails, and no sooner were they in lino* for home than Kate Thorpe shut up. Jean McElwyn then took charge, with Native Queen on her girths. At the distance post Faker was hard at work on Native Queen, leaving Jean McElwyn to win nicely. She is a truegaited filly by Nelson Bingen from the American mare Miss Spiers, and is owned by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. G. McMillan, and trained by R. Berry.
