CASTLE ABLAZE
POLISH ATHLETE LOSES LIFE EIGHT OTHERS PERISH By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Thursday. The Warsaw correspondent of “The Times” says the fire in Dzikow Castle, the residence of Count Tarnowsky, started at midnight in the absence of the Count. The flames speedily involved the whole building. The intense cold prevented the use of water. The occupants organised the rescue of the nonagenarian mother of the Count, and also of the art collection and of relics relating to Polish and Austrian history. The running champion of Poland, Alfred Freyr, was taking a prominent part in the rescue work when the second floor crashed, and eight persons were killed, including Freyr, a girl 14 years old and two schoolboys. Seven other persons were injured, one of whom has died.—A. and N.Z.
