Concliffe jumped away at the t*r mile peg and after traversing foL furlongs was picked up by Bell Harold who kept the lead, and extended tl£ Cup horse fully over the final half' mile. Gold Jacket worked in great styk while accompanying Balmeny over twa miles, the pair of dark browns damping on the pace over the last circuit SQUARE-GAITERS IMPRESS Money Spider and Peter Swift hf out from the two-mile peg and reached the half-mile at a solid clip, where Withers’s charge faulted. He soon balanced again and for the reat the journey was on terms with candidate. The pace was sound* and the pair made a favourable impression. Nourmahal, who looks nice and bright, stepped over a mile and a-half at a good bat, and did her work in approved style. Escapade, the trotting queen, was not asked for her best when traversing four circuits, but the bold, free manner in which she hit out showed her to be anxious for her job. SHEIK HARD PRESSED
. After Sheik and Jack Potts had worked a few rounds at ineduim pace, they were dispatched over 12 furlongs, which was executed in smart time. There was not much between them, although Jack Potts appeared to be the fresher of the two at the end. Native Prince gave an excellent display over 14 furlongs, being accompanied by Master Councillor over the first 12. The latter stepped well, but the Prince was always holding him safely.
Cardinal Logan, Peterwah and Napland were sent over two miles, the latter losing several lengths at the getaway. At the end of a half mile he was on terms with the other pair, and when the last circuit was entered on Great Actress took up the running and led the two a .merry pace to the post. Cardinal Lbgan being on terms with her at the wire and Peterwah handy. AHURIRI DOES IT WELL Chief interest was centred in the trial over two miles between Great Bingen, Kohara and Ahuriri. Ahuriri began best, but Great Bingen was soon on terms, and at the end of a halt mile was fighting for his head. At the mile post Margaret Wallace and Nelson Tasker joined in, the latter being the pacemaker. Margaret kept with them for five furlongs, and then dropped back. Nelson Tasker showed the way into the straight, but J. Bryce shot Ahuriri out and he went away to finish two lengths in front of Great
Bingen and Nelson Tasker, with Kohara two lengths further back. Ahuriri’s effort was a most impressive one. The Cup favourite. Machine Gun, unhoppled, was given several circuits at a useful pace. He looks' a picture, ar.d his friends have no reason to lose hope. Sea Pearl was also indulged in similar work. Petroleuse. who yesterday entered Berry’s stable, having been puichated by Mr. Geo. McMillan, owner of Machine Gun, and Sea Pearl, was not asked to do her best while covering several circuits. Uncle Bert and Bay time were dispatched at the two-mile peg. and paced throughput the journey in attractive style. Bert had a length on Daytime in the run to the post. Happy Rosa and Bad’s Hope were stepped out over two and though not out to break the watefe. moved merrily. Happy Rosa movec in faultless manner, and was most impressive. Native Star, with Bingen Boy as companion, gave a fine exhibition o. trotting over several circuits. The later broke several times when the pressure was on, and spoiled what like an interesting bout. Native *■ stepped out well, and will let the op. _ sition in the Parnell Handicap w*that they have been to the ra s®?* tV far no driver has been secured to Manawatu trotting expert.
