COMMISSIONER HAY’S MERRY CHRISTMAS
ROUND OF VISITING ARMY HOMES CELEBRATE One big round of Christmas visiting has filled Commissioner James Hay’s week in Auckland. As head of the Salvation Army in New Zealand he has called all those under the Army's wing in various homes to the festivities of the season. On Tuesday he gladdened the little hearts of the Grange Orphanage by leading the assault on a truly great feast, which vanished utterly to a clatter of cups and plates and tongues. After the eating the children and their guest went to the playroom where some gay entertaining took place. On Wednesday afternoon, the commissioner took afternoon tea at the Girls’ Rescue Home, Grey’s Avenue, and made a fine address to the girls there, who responded with an entertainment of songs and recitations. Reference was also made to the new home which is being erected in Parnell, which it is expected will be ready in February. The maternity hospital at Grey Lynn received the commissioner on Wednesday night, when more feasting and music took place. The visitor took the occasion to give a humorous chat on Christmases of bygone days. Christmas dinner and carols were features of the Prison Gate Home’s welcome, and the commissioner gave an inspiring address to the men. On Thursday night the poor men of the street gathered round the Army’s generous board and ate a meal with Commissioner Hay and the Mayor. Mr. George Baildon. Yesterday afternoon concluded the tour with a visit to the Home for Elderly Ladies in View Road, Mount Eden.
