ROBBED THE BANK TO PAY PASSAGE
FAN TAN DISPUTE CHINESE STEALS £SO When Leong Young, aged 30, while playing fan-tan lost the £lO which was to pay for his passage from New Zealand, he dipped his hand into the bank and ran away, the Police Court to-day he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £SO. Chief-Detective Cummings said that on June 28 a police raid was made on a Chinese gaming house in Grey Avenue. After the raid gambling operations were suspended, but they were resumed again on Sunday evening. During a game of fan-tan accused grabbed the money in the bank and made off. When searched, he had £2, but later £S was found between his singlets.
Mr. S. W. Tong, who appeared for accused, said that he was subject to a deportation order. He had borrowed £lO to pay for his passage, and this he lost at a game which he thought was being conducted unfairly. For that reason he took the money.
Accused was remanded to appear for sentence on January 20, by which time he will have left New Zealand.
