HOSES PROHIBITED
CAR-WASHING AND GARDENS
FEARS OF WATER SHORTAGE As from to-day,. the use of hoses for watering gardens or washing cars is absolutely prohibited in Auckland. People with gardens may still use watering-cans, and car owners may use buckets of water, but the use of a hose attended or unattended, will, until further notice, result in prosecutions. A number of informations against people who have used hoses in contravention of the regulations have already been laid. Yesterday the water consumption was some 10,500,000 gallons, or approximately a million gallons more than on Wednesday. “I could easily be popular by allowing a free use of the water now,” remarked Cr. J. A. C. Allum this morning, “but if we have no rain for another two months and indiscriminate use is allowed now, I would not care to face the position then. NATURE’S FAILURE “It must be remembered that we have had no rain since the first week in October, and the abnormal conditions are becoming serious, not only for Auckland, but for the whole of the province. “There is plenty of water for the normal requirements of the people, but the abnormal conditions are shortening up the water supply, and the City Council supply can barely be expected to take the place of nature’s usual supply, whatever the papers have to say about it. Perhaps the adverse comments would be more appropriate if directed to taking the heavens to task.”
