HANGMAN ACTOR
EXECUTION ON STAGE QUESTIONS IN COMMONS
By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Wednesday.
Questioned concerning the recent stage performance representing the execution of Charles Peace, in which John Ellis, a former executioner, is appearing, the Home Secretary, Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, said executioners were employed by the sheriffs. He was not empowered to make conditions. Anyhow, these did not apply to an executioner after his retirement. Mr. J. P. Gardner, Labour member for North Hammersmith: Is it the public policy to have executions on the stage? Sir Harry Brittain, Conservative: Cannot the matter be left to public opinion and the Press? Sir W. Joynson-Hicks said he was sure the House regarded such exhibitions as unseemly.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
