Death Intervenes in Murder Charge

Arthur Victor Valentine, who was charged with the murder of Andrew Jose, aged 80, died suddenly at the Borstal Institute at 9 o’clock this morning, supposedly from heart failure. When the accused, who was accountant to the .Bluff Harbour Board, appeared in court on Thursday, his haggard expression and heavy breathing indicated severe mental tension. An inquest will be held to-morrow. ~

Valentine, who was arrested in bed at Stewart Island on December 15, the morning on which the Javanese fisherman, Jose, was found dead at Horseshoe Bay, was brought to Bluff by steamer. He was charged with the murder and remanded to December 22.

On his appearance yesterday he was again remanded, until January 19.
