PRISON ESCAPEES HAVE TERMS INCREASED TWO YEARS FOR GRANT William Henry Grant, aged 35, the habitual criminal who escaped from Mount Eden prison and assaulted Warder Booth, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at the Supreme Court to-day for escaping from lawful custody. This term is cumulative on his present sentence. His Honour said that he had taken no note of the assault charge on which accused had reserved his defence. Robert James Bryden, aged 35. also appeared for sentence on a charge of escaping from custody. He had run away from a warder after he had been taken to the Auckland Hospital for treatment. Accused said he had not committed the offence intentionally, and would like to alter his plea to not guilty. “You can’t do that now,” ‘said "his Honour.
Bryden was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, cumulative on his present sentence.
