PAYMENT BY RESULTS

WORK ON WATERFRONTS AUSTRALIAN PLAN By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. MELBOURNE, Wednesday. Proposals made by Judge Beeby, president of the Arbitration Court, that inquiries be made regarding the introduction of a system of payment by results for work on the waterfront, appear to be favoured by the trades union officials in Melbourne, who say they believe it would eliminate the stevedoring companies which contract with the owners to do the work on a tonnage basis. The secretary of the Wharf Labourers’ Union said if the system was bably promote harmony on the wateracceptable to the men it would profront. The union could contract for loading and unloading vessels, and work would not be so liable to stoppages arising from disputes over the interpretation of awards and agreements. Other officials said that to make poecework successful the middleman would have to be removed.—A. and N.Z.
